President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga should dissolve the government and pave the way for polls in December this year, a Cabinet minister and an MP say.
Planning minister Wycliffe Oparanya and Ikolomani MP Boni Khalwale said the polls would have come in August in line with the law if the electoral commission would have been ready. (READ: Polls date the new frontier for conflict between principals)
Speaking during the funeral service of Mr Eliseba Nyikwaya at Butere ACK Church on Sunday, Mr Oparanya said attempts to postpone polls until March 2013 could create a vacuum in Parliament.
“This would be a recipe for crises,” he said.
Dr Khalwale told mourners at the burial of former Nation Newspaper vendor Laban Mumayi in Shinyalu that President Kibaki had no option but provide enabling environment for the elections to be held in December.
NGO Council boss Ken Wafula said in Nyeri that they would mobilise five million signatures from Kenyans to compel the IEBC to set the election date in December.
