Co-operative development minister Joseph Nyaga has urged Kenyans to shun tribalism, especially during the electioneering time. He said the ''primitive democracy'' borrowed from colonial masters has seen Kenyans violently kill one another, created Internally Displaced Persons and lately driven others to the International Criminal Court at The Hague in the Netherlands. “This primitive democracy that has seen persons aspiring for political leadership retreat to their tribal cocoons during election time resulting to animosities against other tribes should be shunned completely,” said the minister.
Nyaga was addressing teachers at the Muithi Museo Catholic Church Hall on Saturday where he was the chief guest during the Mwingi Mwalimu Sacco Society annual general meeting. He said the country needs to develop home-grown democracy that would ensure that members of Kenyan tribes accommodate each other. ''There is need for all Kenyans to live together as brothers and sisters. Students of political science should craft a form of democracy that embraces harmonious co-existence for all. Kenyans from the five big tribes should also enter into an accord to uphold harmony,'' said minister.
