Kenyan producer Sarah Muhoho's The Boda Boda Thieves film last week turned heads at the Berlin International Film Festival's Talent Campus. The movie, about a poor family in Kampala, Uganda, who scrape by on earnings from the son’s job as a motorbike taxi driver, won the Highlight Pitch Award at the festival’s Talent Project Market. Additionally, it received special mention for the International Relations ARTE Prize for excellence in scriptwriting.
Muhoho worked on this film alongside co-producer James Taylor and Ugandan director Donald Mugisha. "The competition was tough and I feel very honoured and humbled by the support we have received in telling our uniquely African story on an international stage," Muhoho said. The recognition is only the latest in a string of accolades and funding commitments for the film. South Africa’s National Film and Video Foundation, the World Cinema Fund, the Hubert Bals Fund and the Global Film Initiative all funded the film. The film also won accolades at the Durban FilmMart and the International Film Festival of Rotterdam.
