Plans to change the country’s education system inched closer to reality on Tuesday as a national conference got under way to discuss and validate a report calling for the change of 8-4-4 system.
The outcome of the conference that ends tomorrow will form the basis of a Sessional Paper and Strategy for implementing the proposed 2-6-6-3 system of education.
It is hoped that the 2-6-6-3 will come into force in 2014 but Education minister Mutula Kilonzo said he would expedite processing of key Bills to enable the transition.
Speaking at his inaugural assignment as the Education minister, Mr Kilonzo said he would use his expertise in law to enable the country achieve a new order in the sector.
“Critical Bills as that of Education and related policies will be ready by August before I can present them to Parliament,” he told the National Education Conference in Nairobi.
Players in the education sector including government officials, teachers, parents, non-governmental organisations and other lobby groups will iron out contentious issues in the report.
After that, the document prepared by the taskforce on alignment of education with the Constitution shall be officially sanctioned for implementation.
