Moi cautions over change of 8-4-4 system

By Karanja Njoroge

Former President Moi has cautioned against the rush to change the currenteducation system.
Moi advised those keen to change the education sector to take time before implementing the proposals.
He said a project that will affect millions of children requires wide consultation and consensus to ensure proposed changes are approved by majority.
"The Ministry of Education should not consult itself alone in order to come up with solutions in the sector. There is time to seek a second, or a third opinion before you draw a conclusion," Moi said.
The former Head of State was speaking Friday when he presided over the official opening of a multi-purpose hall worth millions of shillings at Nakuru Boys High School.
He was reacting to recommendations by the taskforce on the realignment of the education sector to the new Constitution that could radically change the education sector if implemented.
Moi cautioned that rushing the process may end up producing generations of people with no skills or whose knowledge cannot be put to test.
"I understand that the rush to change the education system is because 8-4-4 is claimed to be examination oriented. Who is this fellow who is afraid of a test?" he posed.
