  • Cabinet approves the National Land Commission Bill, Land Bill and Land Registration Bill
  • Government to turn money owed to it by the Kenya Railways Corporation into equity
Kenya's Cabinet on Thursday approved three bills that set out to overhaul land management in the country.
The three bills, the National Land Commission Bill, Land Bill and Land Registration Bill, are considered crucial in the ongoing reforms process and are now set to be debated when Parliament sittings resume next week.
The National Land Commission Bill 2012 establishes the National Land Commission. The Bill also establishes the County Land Management Boards.
The Land Bill 2012 seeks to revise, consolidate and nationalise land laws, to provide for the administration and management of land and land based resources.
The Land Registration Bill 2012 requires the National Land Commission to establish land registries in all the counties.
The Cabinet also increased government control over Kenya Railways Corporation by converting debts owed to it by the firm into equity.
"The move will relieve Kenya Railways its heavy burden and give the corporation a stronger capital base," a statement released by PPS said.
