Police on Tuesday interviewed Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa on hate speech allegations.
The MP was summoned to CID headquarters and questioned in connection with a letter allegedly written by ODM secretary-general Anyang’ Nyong’o to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and read during a rally at Uhuru Park.
The MP told journalists that he believed the letter, calling for the detention of the Ocampo Six at The Hague, originated from ODM.
“What I made were fair comments on a document that I had no doubt came from ODM because the officer who read it, Mohamud Ali Mohamed, is ODM deputy secretary general. We had no reason to doubt its authenticity.”
He said that Mr Mohamed, who is the Moyale MP, was also scheduled for an interview with the detectives.
Prof Nyong’o, who has denied writing the letter that bore his signature and the party’s logo, made the complaint to the police.
Government Chief Whip Johnstone Muthama was also interviewed by detectives two weeks ago in connection with the matter.
Mr Wamalwa said the letter portrayed Eldoret North MP William Ruto and Finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta as warmongers.
“I have made it clear that we were shocked by the contents of the letter. I still stand by my remarks that the two are not warmongers,” he said.
PNU claimed the letter was written by Prof Nyong’o, demanding that the Ocampo Six not be allowed to return to Kenya because they were “portents of violence”.
When the Ocampo Six returned from their initial appearance before the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber in April, Mr Kenyatta and Mr Ruto headed to Uhuru Park from the airport.
Mr Muthama and Mr Wamalwa were among 40 MPs who travelled to The Hague with the Ocampo Six.
