Civic leaders allied to Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta have bagged all the seats for the giant Kirinyaga county council.
The Kenyatta camp took over the council leadership after all the incumbents were voted out.
Immediately after the polls held in the Kerugoya county chambers on Monday, hundreds of residents led by area Member of Parliament Gachoki Gitari burst into celebrations saying the pace for the 2012 General Election had been set.
Councillor Geoffrey Murimi was declared the new chairman after the incumbent Mr Cyprian Kang’eri, of Narc Kenya, failed to get a proposer.
Mr Kang’eri who had been at the helm since 2007 conceded defeat and pledged to cooperate with the winner.
However, a senior Narc Kenya official, Mr Daniel Karaba, claimed the elections were not free and fair.
“Money was used to influence voters and that was how we lost,” he claimed.
But Mr Gitari, a PNU MP and a close associate of Mr Kenyatta, dismissed the claims as baseless.
“There was no corruption and Mr Karaba who is peddling falsehood should be ignored.
“He is the same person who made the same claims when I beat him in a by-election for Kirinyaga Central constituency,” he said.
Councillor David Kaberenge became the vice chairman after Mr Douglas Njue, who held the seat, while councillor Geoffrey Kamicha was elected the Finance committee chairman.
Swept all positions
In Nyeri Town, councillors associated with Special Programmes minister Esther Murugi swept all the positions during mayoral elections held on Tuesday.
Outgoing Mayor Joseph Thairu was beaten by Mr Edward Mutero. He blamed his deafeat on her interference and vowed to oppose her in next year’s elections.
“We will meet in the elections,” Mr Thairu declared. Former Deputy Mayor Ndirangu Kabai was ousted by Grace Wanyeki, a long serving nominated councillors.
