As such, the opinion poll released by Synovate Kenya on Wednesday urged candidates to unite in order to avoid a run-off.
Prime Minister Raila Odinga would get 32 per cent of the votes while deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta would get 21 per cent as Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka and former Higher Education minister William Ruto tie at third with 11 per cent each.
At least 24 counties
The Constitution states in Article 138 (4) that for one to become president, he/she has to garner more than 50 per cent of the votes cast.
Section (b) further states that one has to garner at least 25 per cent of the votes in at least 24 counties.
Article 137 (1d) also states that a person vying for presidency must be endorsed by not fewer than 2,000 voters from 24 counties before seeking the electoral commission’s nod.
Former Cabinet Minister Martha Karua would emerge fifth at five per cent, while Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa would come sixth at three per cent.
Assistant Minister Peter Kenneth would emerge seventh at two per cent, while Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi and House Speaker Kenneth Marende would tie at eighth with one per cent each.
Some 2,000 respondents took part in the survey. Kenyans said they want a young President with good leadership skills, is a reformist, has integrity, is mindful of Kenyans’ welfare, and is development-conscious.
Mr Odinga’s ratings dropped from 38 per cent in March as Mr Kenyatta’s rose from 18. ODM and PNU are the most popular parties, at 33 per cent and 23 per cent, respectively.
