Four MPs from Meru have said they were working to ensure a presidential candidate allied to PNU and friendly parties takes the region’s vote which has overwhelmingly gone to President Kibaki in the past.
Energy minister Kiraitu Murungi, assistant ministers Kareke Mbiuki and Peter Munya and MP Ntoitha M’Mithiaru said the region had benefited under the Kibaki administration and would like to work with a person from his party.
Speaking at Antu Betwe Catholic parish after the launch of a Sh70 million electrification programme for Igembe North District, the MPs hit out at Prime Minister Raila Odinga for promising the region projects they said were already scheduled for implementation.
“We went to President Kibaki as Meru MPs and gave him a list on projects we wanted implemented. The Meru-Mikinduri-Maua road was there, the Meru-Mitunguu-Chogoria road was also there.
“All those projects that were announced (by Mr Odinga) were there. They should not become a campaign tool for anyone,” said Mr Murungi.
The PNU-Alliance group was countering pledges made by Mr Odinga during two consecutive visits to the region.
Mr Mbiuki and Mr M’Mithiaru said the region had already settled on Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta as the preferred heir to President Kibaki.
“We have supported President Kibaki since 1992. His term is ending in 2012. We want to organise our house as Mount Kenya.
“We have already settled on Uhuru Kenyatta as the preferred candidate to fit in his shoes,” he said.
Mr Murungi and Mr Mbiuki warned that the community stood to lose out on being in the next government if they did not stay united and joined one party.
Mr Murungi proposed that every contestant be subjected to a nomination process to ensure every one was in the same party.
In a veiled attack on Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi, the MPs criticised the legislator of being an “opportunist” and seeking to divide the community.
Mr Munya said the Meru community must “be in the same political house” and promised to bring the East Africa Assembly Speaker and MPs to seek ways of exploring more markets for miraa.
Mr Mbiuki said suspended Higher Education minister William Ruto would go it alone in 2012 polls and that only Mr Kenyatta, Prof George Saitoti and Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka would be competing for the PNU-Alliance ticket.
“Mr William Ruto has already deserted us and is not in the PNU-Alliance. During nominations, please support Uhuru Kenyatta,” he said.
