The Cutting Edge

UNONSTITUTIONAL. On the issue of payment of taxes by MPs, National Assembly Speaker Kenneth Marende is out of order, says Patrick Githu.
The Speaker’s stand, he adds, is in stark contrast to the quick position he took in rejecting, as unconstitutional, President Kibaki’s unilateral attempt to appoint the Chief Justice and other top judicial officers.
“But now, he can’t see anything wrong with the purported promise to exempt MPs from paying tax. Those saying they can’t pay tax half way through their term could not be more wrong,” he concludes. His contact is patrick.githu@gmail.com.

NOT THE WAY PLO: By joining the Law Society of Kenya’s demonstration against corruption at the Lands ministry, the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission has just signalled that it can’t do the job and would rather join civil society in activism, says Martin Tairo.
“The duty of the KACC is to fight corruption. If it cannot do it, then an entirely new agency should be set up to carry on the war. Even director P.L.O. Lumumba, has preferred to be a public speaker on the matter.”

INSECURITY. As he provides spiritual nourishment at his church near Roaster’s Inn on Thika Road at Ruaraka, Ron Osiemo wishes Pastor Pius Muiru could also contribute to enhancing security in the neighbourhood.
Right outside the church is a path used by residents of Thome and Garden estates, who risk life and limb at night, as there is no security lighting. This area, Ron adds, could do with the high-mast floodlights.
“The ‘Nuru Gizani’ man should bring some nuru (light) to chase away giza (darkness),” he pleads. His contact is ronosiemo@gmail.com.

GARBAGE. The re-election of Mombasa mayor Ahmed Mohdhar is bad news for the residents because his first tenure was characterised by poor services, including failure to collect garbage, moans Erick Kevin. But even more annoying, Erick adds, is the mayor’s admission that the council owes huge sums of money to private garbage firms.
“Why should the council be indebted and no litter is collected?” Eric asks.

PARKING. Unless traffic police let lorry drivers park their vehicles at Mariakani on the Mombasa highway, the township is doomed, warns Mutinda Kungi.
“Towns along highways depend on the traffic for their survival. Mlolongo, Mtito Andei and Makindu are good examples. Lorry drivers stop over, spend their money and leave.
If they can’t stop, the town will just die. Machinery and Kambu died after being left out of the rehabilitated highway. Traffic Police should let truck drivers stop and spend their money at Mariakani.” His contact is mutindakungi@live.com.
Have a vibrant day, won’t you!
