Share/Save/Bookmark SUSPENDED Higher Education minister William Ruto will today host a luncheon at his Karen home for over 100 MPs. Ruto yesterday sent a personal invitation to the MPs through short text messages.
His close allies said the purpose of the luncheon is to brief the MPs about his political plans including an update on a series of peace rallies that he and Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta intend to hold in the next few weeks.
Ruto also wants to thank the MPs for standing by him and the other members of the Ocampo Six who made their first appearance at the International Criminal Court at the Hague last week.
The occasion will also serve as a housewarming party after the refurbishment of his Koitobos Road home."The house is magnificent and he wanted it to be like a presidential residence so MPs will be shown around the house as well," said a Ruto confidant.
Ruto, Finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka have been working on a possible alliance to defeat Prime Minister Raila Odinga in the 2012 presidential election.
The other members of the "G7 Alliance" are Tourism minister Najib Balala, MPs Aden Duale and Eugene Wamalwa, and former MP Omingo Magara.
Meanwhile, the battle for the control of the United Democratic Movement by Ruto supporters has now been referred to the Political Parties Tribunal. Ousted chairman (Gen Rtd) John Koech turned to the tribunal to rescind the decision by the party officials to sack him.
In a notice published yesterday in the Standard, Koech's lawyer Mugambi Imanyara requested UDM officials to appear before the tribunal on Tuesday, April 19.
Koech, a close ally of Prime Minister Raila Odinga, was replaced in a coup in November last year by former Kenya National Union of Teachers chairman, Joseph Chirchir, a close ally of Ruto.Ruto has told his supporters that his party of choice is UDM.
Yesterday Political Parties Registrar Lucy Ndung'u said her office will be represented in the independent tribunal chaired by Peter Simani.
