Share/Save/Bookmark Eldoret North MP William Ruto helped raise Sh3.3 million for fellow ICC suspect Joshua Sang'.  During the fundraiser in Nairobi on Thursday night attended by seven Rift MPs, Ruto donated Sh500,000 while Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta donated Sh200,000. Presidential aide and former MP Raphael Tuju who attended gave Sh110,000.
At the event, Ruto scoffed at the charges facing him as a joke and likened them to a scene from a movie. “I am alleged to own EMO, Kass FM, and that you Kalenjins contributed Sh1.5 billion shillings which I used to buy 3,000 guns and I distributed to warriors, and that I also supplied grenades,” he said. “Such things are only possible in a movie, it cannot be possible in this Kenya,” Ruto told his audience. “I wish they could charge us with something more reasonable, I mean something more serious, am sure you will watch a movie from The Hague,” he added.
The Eldoret North MP warned those celebrating their tribulations that the setback is only short-lived and they will soon bounce back. He asked his supporters to remember his rivals in prayers whom he described as heartless people who are now celebrating. “Remember the heartless people who are today, celebrating since their scheme is going to be short-lived,’ he added.
Prime Minister Raila Odinga came under fire during the event, with most speakers castigating him as a thankless person. They took issue with his statement on Thursday that The Hague six will be carted away and life will go on.
There was a moment of anxiety when Eldama Ravine MP Moses Lessonet almost spilled the beans on what he knew about Post election violence only for Ruto to prevail him to stop. “When President Kibaki was sworn on December 30, as ODM MPs including the new elected ones met and…………… I have been told to not to say,” Lessonet said as he looked at Ruto who signaled to him to drop the comment.
While turning to address the crowd in Kalenjin dialect, Ruto told the crowd of traitors who were in the payroll of a foreign diplomat to spy on their community’s activities. “I have the names here and they are seated among us here,” he said as the crowd demanded he reads the names, but he declined. “I want to assure them that they can never succeed in dividing the Kalenjin people, we will shame then,” he declared.
Ruto also denied that any of the Ocampo six is planning to seek asylum in Europe or anywhere. “You can only be a fool to leave a beautiful country like Kenya and seek asylum in a country you are considered a less human,” he added.
The eldoret North M moved the crowd with his narration on how he knew the name of Arap Sang was in the list but was unable to disclose to him.
He said that it took over three calls to him to disclose the bad news a day before ICC prosecutor Louis Moreno Ocampo revealed the names.
However, Ruto insisted that Sang was a victim of his success who should not have been included in the list as bearing greatest responsibility. “I must say that Sang was gifted by God and indeed he has used his talent well but unfortunately, he is paying for his success.”
Minister Helen sambili, MPS William Cheptumo, Lessonet, Charles Keter, Issac Rutto, and Julius Kones were in attendance.
