Share/Save/Bookmark THE Party of National Unity plans to invite ODM Kenya to jointly nominate a candidate for the Kamukunji by-election in Nairobi. The PNU will appoint an internal committee to preside over the nomination next week. This is after the Interim Independent Electoral Commission declined to conduct the nominations as had been requested by the PNU.
Party Organising Secretary Maina Kamanda said that IIEC wrote to the party saying they were not prepared to conduct the nominations. Kamanda said the party management committee will meet with its partners before the end of the week to deliberate on nomination procedures. “As a party we have resolved to involve all PNU affiliates including ODM Kenya in a joint nomination to get the most popular candidate,” he said.
Kamanda said that the move will strengthen PNU in Nairobi ahead of next year’s general election.“We have been talking of forming a formidable coalition and this is the time to prove to anyone in doubt that PNU is committed to meaningful partnerships,” he added.
Kamanda said the PNU had communicated its desire to have a joint PNU/ODM- K nomination for the Kamukunji seat. He assured all candidates that there will be fairness in the nomination.
As PNU contemplates its move, Narc Kenya nominee Brian Weke hit the ground campaigning in Majengo, Eastleigh and Jerusalem suburbs.
The youthful Weke has been pulling crowds mainly of youths who have grown with him having been born and brought up in Kamukunji.“I want to break tribalism in the country by introducing new a style of leadership which involves all segments of our society,” he said at Majengo.
Weke easily identifies with the youths who transcend the ethnic bias which has more often than not influenced voting in Nairobi. The Kamukunji by-election will be held on May 23 and political parties have until April 13 to complete nominations and give the names to the IIEC.
