In Summary
- Ford-Kenya and New Ford Kenya compete in drive to boost membership
Two political parties are battling for supremacy in Western Kenya.
Ford-Kenya and New Ford Kenya have been holding a series of rallies in the area and opening offices.
They have also embarked on massive recruitment of new members.
The rival parties will face each other in a by-election for a council seat in Kimilili constituency. Each side said it is confident of winning.
The Kimilili North ward seat fell vacant after the death of Ford-K councillor Fred Barasa.
Ford-K leader Moses Wetang’ula and Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa agree that winning the council seat will be a show of might.
Mr Wamalwa said the seat will be the key to start the New Ford-K vehicle in the area.
Former Ford-K party chairman Musikari Kombo on Monday urged supporters to decamp to the New Ford-K party. He was speaking at a rally in Kimilili attended by Cabinet minister Najib Balala and Eldoret North MP William Ruto
But Mr Wetang’ula and his secretary-general Eseli Simiyu said they will approach all those who have quit the party to ensure they come back.
“We need unity of our people to ensure we are not used by others,” said Dr Simiyu.
Dr Simiyu said they had come up with a new nominations system to ensure fairness in picking who should run for the presidency.
He said all those with an interest in the presidency within Ford-K should not panic.
Cabinet minister Noah Wekesa criticised Mr Wamalwa for quitting Ford-K. Dr Wekesa recounted how Mr Kijana Wamalwa had warned him against dividing the party before he died.
But former Cabinet minister Mukhisa Kituyi said Ford-K was like a vehicle with no wheels.
