Corridors of Power

Share/Save/Bookmark Some PNU Nairobi officials are unhappy with what they claim is Public Health minister Beth Mugo's attempt at playing favourites. They cite the Ocampo suspects homecoming event on Monday last week where nominated city councillor Tom Ng’ang’a, who is a close ally of Mugo, was called upon to introduce the leaders while former minister Maina Kamanda and other heavyweights were sidelined. The former MPs are now saying there is a plot to marginalise them from city politics. To work out a counter-plan eight PNU branch chairmen and 21 councillors met in a city hotel to draw up their strategy. Coun Ng'ang'a walked in uninvited and was forced to leave in a huff as those in attendance made it clear that he was not welcome.

An MP from Rift Valley who is desperate to retain his parliamentary seat in the next elections has reportedly given his daughter permission to marry one of his strongest political rivals eyeing the seat. Those in the know say the MP hopes his soon to be son-in-law will go easy on his ambitions and support the incumbent for the "family" to retain the seat.

Makadara MP Gidion Mbuvi aka Sonko is at it again. He walked to Jimmlizer Club in Buru Buru on Wednesday night at about 2 am accompanied by six burly bodyguards and ordered drinks. Sonko then moved to a table where a young lady was seated alone. The two had a short conversation and Sonko flashed his business card and extended it to the lady. Unimpressed, the young woman threw down the card to the dismay and embarrassment of the Mheshimiwa. His bodyguards, angry at the young woman’s affront, manhandled her to teach her a lesson — to the disgust of the club management and other patrons who intervened. The burly bodyguards refused to pay for their drinks!

More on Sonko’s bodyguards. Three weeks ago one of them was arrested when he tried to force his way into the registration of births office at Sheria House. The bodyguard and Sonko had arrived at Sheria House at 5.15 pm, which is past closing hours. The bodyguard was denied access by the security resulting in the scuffle. Even before Sonko was sworn in as MP last year, some of his bodyguards roughed up a well known radio DJ claiming he had blocked Sonko’s car.

A High Court judge whom lawyers and litigants were so much afraid of has become so easy going and amenable that the change in attitude has become fodder for gossip in the corridors of justice. Several lawyers and litigants were overheard speculating the change of attitude is probably because the judge will soon be leaving the bench and wants to cause minimal ripples as he prepares for his departure.
