Are the stars aligned for Kalonzo’s second miracle?

Otuma OngaloWhen I saw Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka abandon the comfort of his limousine and dash to squeeze himself between Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto on the bumpy and dusty ride to Uhuru Park’s prayer meeting that never was, I winked knowingly.
I recalled his prophecy that came to pass yet many individuals had shrugged it off as wishful thinking.
Flashback to the 2007 presidential election campaigns: The tempo is high and both pundits and charlatans know the battle is between Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga. Opinion polls have repeatedly placed approval rating of the man born in Tseikuru at eight per cent. Undeterred, the self-declared servant leader promises to kupitia katikati yao (dash between Raila and Kibaki) to have his pride of place at the table of political supremacy.
He vows that come what may, he would be in the next government and when the opportunity presented itself, he did not disappoint – at least himself and cronies. The rest is history.
The season for another battle for political supremacy has begun in earnest and the stars seem to have aligned well for wiper man. And he should monitor the skies regularly because his blessings lie not in wooing and wowing crowds but in fate that befalls or fails to befall his rivals. Already, fate is fast conspiring against Uhuru and Ruto as The Hague scare hangs over their heads like the sword of Damocles and Kalonzo won’t let this opportunity go.
It is not every day that the son of Tseikuru swaps the comfort of his official limo – complete with police outriders – to perch himself precariously on another man’s car – his junior– for a discomforting ride through dust, wind, scorching sun, and screaming hoi polloi, who even determine the car’s pace.
Now, Kalonzo is a good man who many people apparently misunderstand or do not know yet, as he pointed out recently. It happens that even if he does what other politicians are wont to do, he is criticised. When he embraces embattled colleagues in a show of affection, many see a Judas’ kiss. And when he takes a stand on crucial issue, people see double face.
If truth were told, Kalonzo has never been known to harm a fly. Since he can’t fight aggressively, he has perfected the art of reading stars and praying in his quest for political supremacy. Where Prime Minister Raila Odinga excels in winning political souls through parables and proverbs, Kalonzo draws his strength from political miracles and the knack for capitalising on the opportunities that come his way.
The fate of Uhuru and Ruto as they prepare to face Judge Ekaterina Trendafilova at The Hague is a silver lining for Kalonzo, though this does not manifest itself in the VP openly celebrating his allies’ woes.
It is an opportunity that has simply presented itself, just like it has happened that Ruto and Uhuru’s foremost political foe, Raila, is the man to beat for Kalonzo to stand a chance of singing halleluiah in State House. When a hyena spots a wounded buffalo, it’s not its fault. It salivates and makes a kill or patiently waits for the prey to drop dead.
Forget the naivety that the woes facing Uhuru and Ruto are godsend for Raila to knock at the doors of the house on the hill. It is an opportunity for Kalonzo if Uhuru and Ruto’s charges are confirmed and their cases stretch beyond the next election period.
There is a likelihood of them successfully rallying their supporters behind the VP not because they like him but because they loathe Raila and they know he loathes the prospect of a President Kalonzo Musyoka.
The oracle tells me that if Ruto, Uhuru, and Kalonzo enter an alliance, none of them will step down for the other when D-day comes. And that is when Raila stands a big chance of defeating the divided trio. It is unlikely that they may reunite to beat him in case of a runoff.
