Share/Save/Bookmark PRIME Minister Raila Odinga, deputy PM Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto should be prosecuted for hate speech. The call was made by National Commission on Cohesion and Integration Chairman Mzalendo Kibunjia yesterday saying the conduct of the three was in breach of the law.
Kibunjia said the three had breached requirements of Chapter Six of the constitution which regulated the conduct of public officers and which they had all sworn to protect. He said recent public utterances of the three bordered on hate speech and demeaned the offices they held.
Kibunjia was launching the commission's three-year strategic plan at the KICC yesterday. He expressed frustration that the three had refused to heed his warning letters and had continued to use abusive language in public. “The Attorney-General and the police should now take up the matter and commence prosecutions," Kibunjia said.
He described Raila, Uhuru and Ruto as "enemies of national cohesion" who are "thirsty for power". He accused them of employing a "scorched earth politics" in which they sought to destroy any impediment in the way of achieving power by any means.
Kibunjia said their verbal attacks were likely to cause instability because of the nature of Kenyan politics which was based on ethnic mobilisation.
Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister Mutula Kilonzo warned that if any of the three ascended to power, he may even want to abolish the NCIC. “If these people you are giving notices cannot listen, if they get to power l'm afraid they may even want to abolish your commission since it threatens their work,” the minister said.
He suggested that the NCIC devises a method of formalising its warning letters by publishing them in the Kenya Gazette. He warned that the three risked being pushed out of office if they are found to have violated Chapter Six of the constitution.
