Minister for Health Anyang’ Ny’ongo has replaced the Director of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret Prof Harun Mengech. Nyongo has appointed Dr Omar Ali to act as director of the hospital and cancelled results of the recently held interviews.Mengech yesterday received a letter directing him to take compulsory leave. The letter from Nyong’o further stated that Dr Omar will act as director for three month during which the government will re-advertise the position to be filled competitively.
Nyong’o was out of the country for treatment when the interviews were conducted. He arrived at his decision to make Dr Omar the director tentatively after receiving three names of doctors who had topped in the interview.
Yesterday, Mengech could not be reached for comment while Dr Omar said he was yet to receive official communication. Mengech and Dr Fabian Esamai were among the names which had been presented to Nyong’o. There was tension at the hospital yesterday when staff learned of the changes.
Nyong’o has consequently informed the board of the hospital chaired by Prof Ruth Oniango about the new developments. Sources however claimed that there had been corruption in the process of searching for a new director at the hospital with reports that a senior official in the Ministry of Health received Sh7 million to help manipulate the process.
