ODM youths disrupt Wamalwa rally

By Robert Wanyonyi
Eleven people sustained injuries after ODM youths attempted to block Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa from addressing a public rally in Bungoma.
The youths arrived at Bukembe market before 6am and lit bonfires along the Webuye-Bungoma highway before they were repulsed by Ford-Kenya supporters and police.
It was the second time in less than a month for chaos to occur in rallies organised by Mr Wamalwa. The Saboti MP has declared he will contest the presidency.
On December 13, last year, over 400 police officers cordoned-off Nairobi’s Kamukunji Grounds to prevent Wamalwa from addressing a joint rally with former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga. On Saturday, the youths chanted slogans in praise of local ODM MP Alfred Khang’ati, who is an Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister.
Bungoma South AP head, Crispus Mutali, confirmed 11 people had been injured in the fracas. Four of them were admitted to the Bungoma District Hospital while seven were treated at a local dispensary and discharged. Mutali said the police had not been notified of the rally in advance.
Wamalwa later managed to access the venue and addressed the rally. He was accompanied by Bungoma County Council chairman Julius Bakasa and civic leaders from Trans Nzoia and Western Province.
