Thousands of party goers ushered in 2011 in style at the star-studded Groove Party held at the KICC grounds and plenary hall.
The plenary hall served as a club where gospel deejays hyped the crowd while the KICC grounds hosted live performances for the older fans.
The show, organised by DJ Kev’s Mo Sound Entertainment, saw a sea of humanity attend and it did not disappoint them.
A record 20 live performances were staged, led by the ever-energetic Rose Muhando from Tanzania, Pastor Uche from Nigeria, Exodus from Uganda and Kenya’s best, Daddy Owen.
There were memorable acts by artistes like Jimmy Gait, Esther Wahome, Kambua, Emmy Kosgei, Wakabura, Marion Shako and highly anticipated Christina Shusho of the hit “Wakuabudiwa”.
The gospel king of collabo, Danko, was also present and he gave such a brilliant performance that one would never have guessed he had arrived from hospital where he had been put on an intravenous drip for malaria.
Rose Muhando was also unwell and must have used up all her energy on stage as she had to be assisted to get off stage by the bouncers.
The star of the night was Nigeria’s Pastor Uche of the “Double Double” hit.
Dressed in a white jacket and black jeans, the man who has taken Kenya by storm showed all why no one should write him off as a one-hit wonder. He mingled with the crowd and kept the security men busy following him around.
The organisation of the show was near perfect, which may explain why the grounds were still packed at 4 a.m. while some of the clubs in town had closed or were trying to stir up blacked-out patrons.
The show had been sponsored by NTV, Buzz Magazine, Safaricom, Coke, KPLC and Nokia
If this is anything to go by, then gospel music is set to dominate the Kenyan music scene again in 2011.
