Coast People Forum has come up with list of professionals who will also be in the race

As the implementation of the new Constitution starts, Coast politicians and professionals are taking strategic positions targeting the newly-created governor and senator posts.

Coast People Forum (CPF), an organisation that brings professionals together, is already drawing programmes for a string of meetings to critically look at the new laws.

It has also come up with a tentative list of technocrats to take up the positions once the county governments come into effect.

CPF spokesman Beja Zia said: “We do not want to be caught napping and lose out on the goodies that come with the implementation of the new Constitution. That is why, as professionals, we should also take up a leadership role in this,” Mr Zia said.

Several leaders have come out in the open and made their stands known. Lamu East MP Mohammed Abu Chiaba will battle it out with dozens of newcomers and seasoned politicians in the race for the Senate.

Deserves promotion

His Lamu West counterpart, Mr Fahim Twaha, declared his candidature for the Lamu county governorship, saying he deserved promotion after representing the constituency three consecutive times in Parliament since 1997.

“We have served the two constituencies for quite some time. We need promotion to the top positions to serve the area better,” Mr Twaha told the Daily Nation over the phone on Monday.

Mr Chiaba could not be reached for comment as his phones were switched off for the better part of Monday.

Nominated MP Shakila Abdallah said she had no interest in vying for the two positions but would be running for the position of MP for Lamu East.

“We need a senator and a governor who will be in Lamu all the time and not leaders who will be touring the area as strangers,” she said.
