Kenyans abroad seek say in House

Kenyans abroad are still pushing for an opportunity to elect one of their own to represent their interests in Parliament.

Mr John Maina, the President of the Kenya Community Abroad, said he will present a proposal to the Interim Independent Boundaries Commission to create an ‘abroad constituency’ for Kenyans living outside the country.

He said the idea had worked in other countries like Britain, Nigeria and India, and that there was no reason the same could not be replicated in Kenya.

Deserve a representative

“There is no way you can ignore the more than 2.8 million Kenyans living out of the country,” he told the Daily Nation in an interview.

“We are the most ‘populous constituency’ of Kenyans and deserve a representative in Parliament.”

The boundaries review commission is demarcating constituencies afresh following the release of the census results, which showed that the country’s population had risen to 38.6 million.
