IIEC shifts to official poll results only

NAIROBI, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Kenya's electoral commission (IIEC) said on Thursday it had stopped publishing provisional results for the constitution referendum and is now releasing only constituency tallies as they are confirmed officially. Up until now, the electoral authority was broadcasting provisional results as they were fed electronically to the tallying centre in Nairobi from individual polling stations. The results only become official when the returning officerfrom each of the country's 210 constituencies arrives in person in the capital so the results can be confirmed.

When provisional results stopped, the IIEC had received tallies from 14,786 out of 27,689 polling stations.

NOTE

* The winner must garner 50 percent plus one vote of the total votes cast and also 25 percent of the poll in at least five of Kenya's eight provinces.

* The IIEC must publish the final official tally within 48 hours of the polls closing at 5 p.m. (1400 GMT) on Wednesday.
