NYAHURURU, Kenya, Aug 15 - The government has deployed more security personnel to Thome and Machunguru areas of Laikipia West district following heightened tension over the killing of one person by armed cattle rustlers who also made away with over 160 goats.
Jackson Aburu, 25, was killed and Metile Lobololo was seriously injured as they engaged the rustlers armed with AK 47 rifles on Thursday night.
According to area Administration Police boss Senior Superintendent Francis Ng’ang’a, tension was high as a section of the community threatened to avenge the killing and recover the stolen livestock.
Mr Ng’ang’a said that police officers were still pursuing the rustlers who fled towards Kirimon area along the Suguta Marmar Valley in Samburu district.
The deceased was moved to Nyahururu district mortuary while the injured man is admitted at the same hospital with a bullet lodged in his left leg.
The locals say insecurity is on the rise in the area and want the government to intervene.
The AP boss has however appealed for calm saying investigations were underway and assured them that the suspects would soon be arrested and charged in court.
“We have deployed more security officers at Thome area following the killing and threats by members of the public that they would avenge the killing of one of their own,” he said.
Mr Ng’ang’a said the security agents have also engaged village elders from the two communities to ensure that calm prevails.
"We have called for elders from the two communities involved in the incident to helps calm down the tension and urged their members not to engage in anything that would result to killing or loss of property," he told Capital News in Rumuruti.
