A number of leaders, among them sitting and former MPs from Meru, have declared interest in senior offices that will be created by the new Constitution.

Energy minister Kiraitu Murungi and former Education assistant minister Adams Karauri said they were eyeing the Senate seat in the Meru county, while Imenti Central MP Gitobu Imanyara is seeking to be the county’s governor.

Insurance broker Nelson Kaimenyi is also eyeing the same position.

Declared intentions

Mr Murungi has represented Imenti South constituency since 1992. In Tharaka-Nithi county, Chuka mayor John Mbaabu, and former MPs Francis Kagwima (Tharaka) and Mr Petkey Miriti (Nithi) have declared their intentions to vie for the Senate.

Mr Miriti told the Daily Nation that he will be fighting for a Senate seat come the first General Elections under the new Constitution in 2012.

Some of the 2007 election losers, among them Mr David Karithi (Tigania West) and Mr Domiciano Kaburu Njeru, have also expressed interest in the Senate seats in Meru and Tharaka-Nithi counties respectively.

Fight for liberation

Mr Imanyara said he will base his campaigns on his record in the fight for the second liberation, adding that it benefited Meru residents.
