Catholics to fight on over new laws

The Catholic Church will continue to fight for changes in the new constitution despite the overwhelming endorsement of the new law.

John Cardinal Njue said the clergy will push for amendments of clauses on abortion and the Kadhi courts since they have the moral authority to do so on behalf of followers.

Speaking during Mass at the Ndundu Catholic Church in Gatundu South, Cardinal Njue said the church did not lose face following the passing of the new constitution.

He said: ‘‘It is the duty of the church to preach against social evils including abortion.’’ The Cardinal called on Parliament to initiate amendments of the contentious clauses.

At the same time Public Health minister Beth Mugo asked Kenyans to be patient during the implementation of the new constitution.

She also called on MPs who were campaigning against the constitution to support Bills that will pave the way for the new law to be operational.

Cardinal John Njue, the head of the Nairobi Archdiocese, was conducting mass at Our Lady Queen of Peace in South B, Nairobi, during 25th Silver Jubilee Celebration of Mukuru Promotion Centre.

The centre, ran by Irish Sisters of Mercy caters for the community living in the sprawling Mukuru slums in Nairobi. More than 7,000 pupils from the slum are currently benefiting from the project.
