'Yes' heads to Kibaki stronghold without PM

For the first time, the Yes team heads to a campaign rally without Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a key leader in the push for the proposed constitution.

In his absence, President Kibaki will be joined by Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and deputy prime ministers Musalia Mudavadi and Uhuru Kenyatta in taking the Yes campaign to Ruringu stadium in Nyeri Town Saturday.

A statement from the Yes secretariat headed by Cabinet ministers Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o and Kiraitu Murungi stated that the President will lead a high-powered campaign team to the rally, the first in his central Kenya stronghold.

The chairman of the Central Kenya parliamentary group, Mathira MP Ephraim Maina, told the Nation that all plans for the rally had been finalised.

“It is the culmination of the leaders' meeting we had in Limuru last week where we involved all leaders from MPs, councillors, elders and even religious leaders in drumming up support for the proposed constitution in the region. The rally will signal the beginning of the campaign in Central Province, we are ready,” he said.

Forefront

Mr Odinga and President Kibaki have been at the forefront in drumming up support for the proposed constitution and have held high profile rallies in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Machakos.

President Kibaki, however, skipped last weekend’s Yes rallies in Bungoma and Kakamega, which were led by Mr Odinga and Mr Mudavadi, as he was attending a church function in Embu.

Another Yes campaign team will be in Kajiado town on the same day for yet another rally.

The rally has been organised by Internal Security minister George Saitoti, his National Heritage counterpart William Ole Ntimama and Defence assistant minister Joseph Nkaissery, the statement said.

Mr Odinga is recuperating at the Nairobi Hospital after undergoing a head operation on Tuesday. He is not expected to leave hospital for a few days.
