ODM

ODM had mixed fortunes in civic by-elections, maintaining its dominance in certain regions, but losing its grip in Rift Valley.

The party that enjoyed overwhelming support in the Rift Valley in the last General Election retained one out of the four seats contested in the polls in South and Central Rift.

ODM’s dismal performance in Rift Valley comes in the wake of political differences between Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Higher Education Minister William Ruto.

Former Cabinet minister Nicholas Biwott, who is also the National Vision Party leader, took advantage of the differences to have the party candidates capture the civic seats.

However, ODM dominated civic by-elections in Nyanza Province, winning six of the eight contested seats.

According to results released by Nyanza Central Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) co-ordinator George Oyugi and his Nyanza South counterpart Sara Ogaro, Peoples Development Party and Ford- People shared the remaining seats.

ODM’s James Munde garnered 1,720 votes to beat Okuku Ajuma of Narc in Central Uyoma on Monday.

ODM’s Nicholas Were captured the North Gem civic seat with 2,975 votes, while Fredrick Oyange of PNU came second with 102 votes.

In Kisii, ODM captured Nyachogochogo and Sironga wards in Bobasi and West Mugirango constituencies.

Peoples Democratic Party and Ford-People captured the Gekonge in Nyaribari Masaba and Marani ward in Kitutu Chache constituency seats.

At Nyachogochogo, ODM’s Duncan Kerongo won with 610 votes. Peoples-Party of Kenya‘s Job Onsabwa followed closely with 578 votes.

At Sironga ward, musician Bernard Onsongo clinched the seat after received 1,398 votes. In Marani, Japheth Nyambane Morara beat 11 candidates with 1,754 votes against ODM’s Peterson Abuya, who had 715.

In Rift Valley, results indicated ODM lost Kaptengwet, Sigor and Kambi ya Moto civic seats to Kanu, National Vision Party and DP.

At Makongeni ward, ODM candidate Molock Kiprop beat PNU’s Nyandieka Omuron by more than 400 votes. Kanu won a civic seat in Emgwen, Nandi Central District, an ODM stronghold, with Lucy Chepkwony of Kanu getting 978 votes in Chepterit ward, Kapsabet, while her closest rival, ODM’s Benjamin Tanui, got 580.

In Rongai constituency, ODM lost the Kambi ya Moto civic seat to a DP candidate.

ODM later re-affirmed its grassroots support in Mombasa after it won the Changamwe and Mwembe Tayari civic seats on Monday.

The Changamwe and Mwembe Tayari seats fell vacant following death of councillor Kelvin Wesonga and resignation of former councillor Abdalla Ibrahim respectively.
