Kenyan leader attends Extra-Ordinary IGAD Summit

President Mwai Kibaki is in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the 15th Extra-Ordinary Summit of IGAD Assembly of Heads of State and Government which kicked off on Sunday.

The plane carrying the President and his delegation touched down at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa shortly before 6:00-pm on Sunday.

On arrival the Head of State was warmly received by senior Ethiopian Government officials and Kenyans residing in Addis Ababa led by the Kenyan Ambassador to Ethiopia Dr. Monica Juma.

The two day summit which will be attended by other IGAD regional leaders will mainly focus on the political and security situation in Somalia.

The IGAD summit is also expected to review the 36th Extraordinary Session of the IGAD council of Ministers, report of the IGAD Military Experts' Mission to Somalia and consideration of the Draft Communiqué of the 15th Extraordinary Summit of IGAD Heads of State and Government.

The summit would have a vital role to discuss the way forward in attaining a lasting solution for the country's security and political problem that has lasted for many years.

The summit is expected to be a forum where the disagreements among the various parties in the country and within the government will be discussed and resolved.

IGAD, which was established in 1986, is located in Djibouti and its members include Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda. Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi is the current Chairperson of the IGAD Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
