IIEC pledges clean register

Voter verification exercise came to an end on Sunday to give the Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) time to prepare for the August 4 referendum.

The Commission, however, allayed fears that those who did not visit the centres might be locked out of the plebiscite saying all clerks had been instructed to ensure they matched the records in the provisional register and the manual book where voter details were first entered.

"The finalised register will be ready on 21 of this month. IIEC will avail copies of the final register to all the 47 registered political parties, referendum committees and other stakeholders. There will also be copies at our constituency and regional offices for those who wish to confirm the status of their registration," read part the statement issued by the Commission chairman Hassan Isaack on Sunday.

Voters had been given a month to confirm their registration details at the centres where they had registered.

The more than 12 million Kenyans were required to verify their details at the registration centres, or through an SMS service.

Mr Hassan said a national register was a demanding undertaking, but assured that all errors will be corrected in time.

"The manual books where information is first captured provide a fall back opportunity and therefore all people who registered will find their names in the registered after the cleaning exercise," he said.
