Former Youth Fund boss Gor Semelang'o has been barred from running in the Mathare by-election scheduled for August 7.
The IEBC ruled that Semelang'o cannot vie in the election after Mathare constituency returning officer Joseph Masindet declined to clear him after he failed to turn up for a summons to prove that he had quit public office six months in advance of expressing interest in the parliamentary seat that fell vacant following a successful poll petition.
Semelang’o through his lawyer Peter Morintat had however argued that the Public Office Act requirement for potential candidates to have been out of public office for at least six months, only applied to general elections.
Semelang’o faulted ODM executive director Magerer Langat for his barring saying that it was after Langat wrote a letter to the commission that he was barred.
Semelang’o also dismissed claims that he orchestrated his sacking from the helm of the youth fund in order to be able to vie in the August 7 exercise.
The candidates who have been cleared by IEBC for the poll are ODM’s Stephen Kariuki, TNA’s George Wanjohi and independent candidate Blasto Barack Obat.
One other candidate, Chrispinus Fwamba of the Maendeleo party was also not cleared by the IEBC after failing to meet the threshold to contest in the August 7 election.
