Cord leader Raila Odinga has alleged that there is a plot by the Jubilee government to muzzle any opposition to its shortcomings through the laws of treason.
The former Prime Minister made the remark during a press conference that had been called by the opposition to announce a committee to steerhead the calls for a referendum by Cord.
Odinga said that Cord got a letter which proves the allegations in which the government wanted to arrest Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar among other Cord leaders over alleged incitement.
The letter in question is said to have been written by State House Chief of Staff Joseph Kinyua and addressed to the solicitor general Njee Muturi and the Attorney General Githu Muigai calling for the application of the law on treason to arrest Cord leaders.
“The solicitor general, state law office, to advise the national security advisory council on the application of the law on treason in relation to political incitement aimed at taking over power through unconstitutional means,” the letter read.
Odinga however said that the calls for the referendum are still on and that the structure of how it will be achieved, will be released by the end of the week ending July 19.
