Marende let me down - Mudavadi

Monday, September 9, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY IBRAHIM ORUKO
UDF leader Musalia Mudavadi has called for unity of the Luhya community.
Mudavadi said the leaders are hypocritical and only trade insults at public gatherings.
“What unites people is the common purpose not the tirades you throw at colleagues and other tribes,” he said.
The UDF leader said this in response to comments by former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo during the homecoming party of Hamisi MP Charles Gimose in Vihiga town on Saturday.
Former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo said he is the best bet for the community’s push for the presidency bid while berating other communities.
Musalia said apart from Jirongo, other leaders did not support his presidential bid.
He said former speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marende and other MPs betrayed the community by not supporting him.
“I have no apologies for contesting the presidency. Some have made unity calls a fashion after absconding to guarantee unity in elections. They owe the community an apology,” he said.
Former Kanduyi MP Alfred Khangati asked for forgiveness for supporting former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. “I betrayed the community twice supporting Raila.
Never again! I will only support a member of the Luhya community,” Khangati said.
Marende said he believed in Luhya unity because the constitution recognises tribes.
“As speaker I kept repeating that Parliament is national not tribal. But now, the constitution recognises tribes, I now support the Luhya for presidency,” he said.
