The electoral commission will this week release the final results of the March 4 General Election.
Commission chairman Ahmed Issack Hassan on Monday said his team was speeding up the computation of the results, which will form the basis for parties to share out the Sh330 million allocated to the Registrar of Political Parties to be shared among parties based on their performance in the polls.
“We will release them very soon even though we are not very sure if the money has been sent to the account,” he said on phone.
The computed results show the strength of political parties in terms of the number of county assembly representatives, MPs, county women representatives, senators and the votes each got in presidential elections.
Computed results
The Political Parties Act sets the guidelines on how political parties are to share the money. Only parties that received more than five per cent of the total votes cast in an election will benefit.
Three weeks ago, Cord leader Raila Odinga demanded that the results be released to pave the way for parties to share money from the Political Parties Fund.
“If indeed the IEBC conducted a free and fair poll, why is it delaying the computation of the election results three months later?” Mr Odinga asked during a rally in Kawangware, Nairobi.
In the elections, President Uhuru Kenyatta of the Jubilee Coalition garnered 6.1 million votes to beat Cord’s Odinga who had 5.3 million votes.
