NAIROBI, Kenya Apr 21 – The government has interdicted police officers officers accused of collaborating with terrorist groups and other criminal gangs in Garissa, leading to the highest crime rate in the region.
Internal Security Permanent Secretary Mutea Iringo said a reward of up to Sh100, 000 has also been offered to area residents who volunteers information leading to the arrest of most wanted criminals responsible for armed crime in the region.
The twelve interdicted officers include area CID boss, APs and chiefs but sources said a more comprehensive purge was underway.
In a statement on Sunday, Iringo said they are preparing to deploy GSU officers to carry out a massive security operation in the region in search of criminal gangs responsible for insecurity at the border town.
The move follows Saturday’s visit by Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo and other senior police officers as directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The President through the head of the Civil Service Francis Kimemia, ordered top security chiefs to visit Garissa and thoroughly investigate rampant insecurity in the area after ten people were killed on Thursday night by a group of four gunmen.
The four gunmen stormed a restaurant known as Kwa Chege and sprayed patrons with bullets indiscriminately, killing the ten innocent Kenyans.
The internal security PS added that the security officers will streamline and closely monitor operations of taxi and Boda boda operators between 6 o’clock in the morning to 6 o’clock in the evening.
“The Ministry appeals to members of public in Garissa and indeed the entire country to work closely with the security and administration officials to ensure peace and security in the country,” the PS urged.
A briefing on the security situation in Garissa and investigation progress is expected to be given to the President by Monday.
Thursday night’s attack has been blamed on the Al Qaeda-linked militants although the group is yet to claim responsibility.
