Corridors of Power

FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY POLITICAL DESK
Some of the candidates who have lodged election petitions in various courts are going to extraordinary lengths to convince the judges that they were 'robbed' of victory. In one such instance, a loser from the Mount Kenya region found himself on the spot when a local priest complained that the man had asked him to sign a false affidavit alleging the election was rigged. The priest told him off in no uncertain terms and has indicated his intention to inform the court of the man's attempt to get him to lie under oath.

President Kibaki's Private Secretary Nick Wanjohi is a powerful man. Besides keeping Kibaki's diary he is the chairman of the Numerical Machining Complex (NMC) the successor of the ill-fated Nyayo Motor Corporation which operates out of the former Kenya Railways Workshop. Some individuals are however wondering  whether one can hold both positions- serving as a civil servants and serving as parastatal chairman simultaneously claiming that it contravenes the law. Our moles claim that recently, workers at NMC were informed that a new, relatively swanky office being set up at the organization is for their chairman and some have been murmuring that this could be part of Prof Wanjohi's retirement plan.

A newly elected senator and an MP have found common ground quite quickly and were recently spotted at a club in Mtwapa where they had gone for some drinks. There was no PDA—public display of affection— but their closeness was unmistakable as they read messages from one of their phones. Our mole regrets taking a real time photo of the endearing scene which we could have shared with our readers.

Attempts by a local media house to take a position in the just ended elections seems to have hurt its ratings in Central Kenya. A request by a Nyeri bar patron that the management change channels to watch the news provided by this particular media house was vociferously opposed by other patrons and the management. A well heeled personality in the area is reported to have recently called a family meeting and among other things, warned his children they should not announce his death on any of the media house's popular vernacular stations!
