FOREIGN JOURNALISTS are welcome in Kenya, just abide by LAW - BITANGE NDEMO

Friday, the 15th of March 2013 - The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communication Dr. Bitange Ndemo today tried to cool down the talk about deporting foreign journalists from Kenya by saying that they are always welcome in the country as long as they get the proper accreditation from ‘the Media Council of Kenya (MCK)’.

Ndemo also again raised the red flag over the use of social media tools to propagate hate speech in Kenya. The PS accused some politicians and their supporters of using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to encourage ethnic polarization.

On Wednesday, Director of Information Joseph Owiti warned foreign journalists that they risk being deported from Kenya if they don’t respect the law regarding accreditation;

“The Department of Information is currently the organisation that is charged with the responsibility of accrediting international journalists wishing to work in this country so if they don’t have it then they should not be here,” he said.

“We have a lot of foreign journalists in this country and how they are operating we don’t know. We may need to seek the support of security personnel to help us identify those people who are here illegally… we had a few problems with some foreign journalists of CNN and the story on Financial Times,” he added.
