Cord’s presidential candidate has refused to concede defeat and decided to challenge Jubilee win in court. While this may be dismissed as a usual trend in Africa not to concede defeat even in fair and free election I feel this election raised serious issues.
The failure of the BVR kits in identification of voters already indicates a malpractice. This may have been beyond IBEC’s control but one wonders why they allowed some areas to use the kits while others used manual registers. Judge Kriegler’s insistence on use of the kits was to avoid ghost voters.
Two the use of phones to transmit election results direct from the polling stations to the national tallying centre again was to avoid the data being manipulated but their failure again raises serious concern.
Four, the issue of rejected votes is also a major concern. At first the rejected votes had accumulated to more than 300,000, only to fall drastically to 20,000. This was attributed the error an IT bug that was doubling the number of the rejected votes, But would this not affect the presidential scores?
Five the issue of the cast votes surpassing the registered voters in some areas also raises concerns.
It’s important that the Supreme Court which is now the last stop in dealing with these issues, urgently and expeditiously does so. Those who lost and won need to harbour no doubts about the results.
