Corridors of Power

TUESDAY, MARCH 12, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY POLITICAL DESK
Miguna Miguna, Raila Odinga's political advisor turned critic and author of two books was among several Luo leaders who called a press conference to congratulate President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta. Asked to repeat his message in Kiswahili for the benefit of the radio and television audience who may not be as conversant with English as he is, Miguna stood up and said: "You must be joking!" before leaving.

A loser in the race for Kisumu governor has allegedly 'gone missing' with one of the vehicles he had hired from a local firm for use in his campaigns in the just concluded elections. The care hire company claims the deal was that the politician would return the vehicle last Friday. Every time the man has been contacted, he has claimed to be in meetings and promises to call back which he does not do. The amount he has accumulated so far is only Sh40,000. But coming at the end of a grueling campaign during which the man had spent thousands of shillings, this amount may just be proving to be too big to settle.

The election of more than 290 members of national assembly has
brought with it a myriad of challenges. At the Bomas tallying centre
last week, a Cord coalition national coordinator pushed away a newly
elected MP mistaking him for a journalist. He apologized profusely when
he was advised that the man was actually a new Mheshimiwa by Cabinet
minister James Orengo and other colleagues.

Still at
Bomas, CIC chair Charles Nyachae whose face has been on television
screens and in newspapers for a long time was taken aback when a police
constable barred him from accessing the VIP Lounge where IEBC chairman
Isaack Hassan was. The man who is in charge of the commission to
implement the constitution could not even consult with the the man who
is in charge of one of the events to kickstart the full implementation
of the Katiba! The police constable said he had 'instructions from
above' which said he should not allow anyone, not even Nyachae to enter
the lounge. The incident is reminiscent of the fiasco at the airport
where an immigration officer attempted to bathe CJ Willy Mutunga from
leaving citing yet again— instructions from above!
