Nairobi; Kenya: The British government says it will maintain an impartial but mutual relationship with Kenya and was looking towards a peaceful, free, fair and credible general election.
“The UK will remain impartial. What is important to us is not who wins the general election but how he wins the polls,” High Commissioner Christian Turner said during a meeting with Standard Group CEO Sam Shollei and journalists at the media house’s head office along Mombasa Road, Nairobi.
“The UK and Kenya matter to each other.  No one wishes to isolate Kenya from the International Community. Our relationship stems from the deep and historic ties between our peoples, and our vital shared interests.  These interests are political, economic, commercial, cultural and in relation to security.  Some 200,000 nationals visit each country a year, we have over Sh130bn in bilateral trade a year and we look towards doubling our volume of investments in four years,” Mr Turner said.
He explained that UK government had extended Sh2 billion to Independent electoral and Boundaries Commission towards election preparations and so far he was satisfied with progress made in readiness for the March 4, general election.
The envoy was categorical that the cases of four Kenyans before the International Criminal Court (ICC) will not necessarily lead to isolation of the whole country.
Ambassador Turner said the ICC suspects were free to visit United Kingdom and had no sanctions imposed on them as yet.
“We support continued cooperation with ICC because we support the rule of law. We stand for justice for victims of Post election violence and our current policy is not to speculate on what will befall Kenya should suspects be elected to office,” Turner said.
The envoy called for intense civic and voter education ahead of the general election.
Mr Shollei said Kenyans are keen on having a peaceful election and asked politicians to carry out campaigns in a manner that does not jeopardize peace.
“Kenyans have learned from the past. The election will usher in a new dawn, the first polls under a new Constitution and Kenyans want a free, fair and peaceful election.”
