Police shoot at IEBC chair vehicle

By Cyrus Ombati
NAIROBI, KENYA: Police shot at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chair Isaac Hassan’s vehicle on Sunday night after mistaking it had robbers on board.
Hassan was not in the vehicle but his bodyguard and two other officers escaped unhurt in the 10pm incident that happened at Hardy estate in Nairobi.
Hassan’s bodyguards were responding to an alarm raised after a robbery but on approaching the scene, they were shot at by police.
The bodyguard jumped out of the vehicle hid in a bush but immediately identified himself as a police officer assigned to guard the IEBC chair.
Lang’ata DCIO James Manuni said the police officers who shot at the vehicle thought it was being driven by robbers.
He said the incident was a case of mistaken identity because the police had not anticipated the arrival of a vehicle.
Hassan said on Monday that the car was shot at eight times.
