Just before musician Prezzo left Nairobi for Lagos on Thursday afternoon, he was upbeat as he chatted with his lover, the Nigerian singer Goldie Harvey, on the phone.
“She had already landed in Lagos from the US, where she had attended the Grammy Awards and was waiting for me to have a late Valentine’s dinner,” Prezzo told the Saturday Nation in a telephone interview Friday afternoon.
“We chatted for a very long time. In fact, I had to cut her short as my flight was about to take off,” recalls Prezzo.
By the time he landed in Lagos on Thursday at about 10pm, his phone had run out of charge. “However, I found it strange that it was Goldie’s driver who came to pick me up at the airport when usually it would be her receiving me,” said Prezzo.
When they got to Goldie’s house, some of her relatives told Prezzo she had gone to see a doctor since she had a bad headache.
“I entered the house and decided to charge my phone. Then I went on Twitter, and that is when I started seeing condolence messages coming in,” said Prezzo.
Prezzo said at first he thought it was a bad joke.
He decided to confront one of Goldie’s relatives, who confessed they had not known how to break the bad news to him.
“By the time I landed, she was already dead. I think the relatives didn’t know how to break the news to me,” he said.
“It is still hard to believe this, but we leave it all to God.”
Friday, relatives and the Kenyan media tried to reach Prezzo in vain.
He also kept off the social media.
Prezzo had on Tuesday attended a recording for the Churchill Show, where he talked about his relationship with Goldie.
The interview will be aired Sunday evening on NTV.
He said he planned to marry her and that bride price payment arrangements were underway.
Besides a late Valentine’s Day dinner with Goldie in Lagos, Prezzo had intended to stay in Nigeria for about a month, as Goldie was shooting a reality show, Tru Friendship, about her life.
“Goldie had already started shooting the TV show, so I was supposed to be in it as well,”  said Prezzo.
Goldie was pronounced dead on arrival at the Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island, Lagos, at 7.30pm on Thursday, where she had been rushed after complaining of a severe headache.
She had arrived from the US the same day, where she had attended the Grammy Awards together with Kennis Music owners Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo D1 Adeney.
Kennis Music Friday released a statement on her death.
“We consider this period a gloomy moment for us and the entire Nigerian music industry in view of the circumstance in which she passed away; the abundance of talent she exhibited in her short but eventful music career,” said the statement.
“She is survived by her father, step-mother, brothers and sisters. We deeply sympathise with her family and fans all over the world and very grateful to all and sundry, especially, the vibrant Nigerian media for their concern and prompt reportage. We shall keep everybody informed as events unfold as we are devastated by the sudden loss.”
Goldie hit the limelight with her hit song, Say My Name and was, before her passing, clearly, the most prominent member of Kennis Music.
She became a continental name when she participated in last year’s Big Brother Africa Stargame, alongside Prezzo and other African stars.
The competition sparked a love relationship between the two, which went on after they left the BBA house.
In East Africa, Goldie has done music collaborations with Tanzania’s AY and Uganda’s Navio.
Born Susan Filani Harvey, she adopted the stage name Goldie.
She is from Ekiti State in south west Nigeria.
She was 31.
