Amani Coalition’s presidential candidate Musalia Mudavadi has warned Kenyans against electing individuals facing charges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) due to possible sanctions by the international community.
Speaking at Tendere in Bomachoge Chache on his second day of campaigns in Kisii County, the Deputy Prime Minister said politicians claiming the country does not need the international community were hoodwinking Kenyans.
Mudavadi said the threat of sanctions by the international community was real and the economy would be seriously hurt if such people were elected.
“Contrary to claims by some politicians seeking high office, Kenya needs the international community. We rely on the foreign market for local products including tea, soapstone and coffee. Will these politicians buy all our produce? They will certainly raise tax stifling agriculture and compounding Kenya’s problems,” cautioned Mudavadi.
Tribal blocs
The DPM, who was accompanied by his running mate Jeremiah Kioni and UDF aspirants George Nyamweya and Prof Zadoc Ogutu eyeing senator and governor’s posts in Kisii County, said the economy would be ruined if “bad leaders” were elected.
“In the Amani Coalition, we have vowed to steer clear of divisive politics because we don’t need to incite people into the trap of violence. We shall provide free education up to secondary level and properly run the economy,” he added.
Mr Kioni accused some presidential candidates of relying on tribal voting blocs instead of seeking national mandate, saying it was not possible to lead the whole nation peacefully after ascending to power thanks to one or two tribes.
“We are seeking a national mandate and commit to fully implement the Constitution so Kenyans can realise the full benefits of devolution. Our candidate Mudavadi understands the concept of devolution better as he was instrumental in its formulation,” said Kioni.
