VICTORY for ANYANG’ NYONG’O as nurses call off STRIKE

Tuesday, the 8th of January 2012 -Kenya’s nurses have today called off their strike, a month after they resolved to down their tools until the Registrar of Societies’ registered their union.

The decision comes after a week of bad news for the nurses when the government refused to pay their December salaries and the Industrial Court sitting in Nairobi ruling that their strike was unlawful and ordering them to return to their posts.

The nurses have however vowed to keep pressure on the Registrar of Societies and the Ministry of Medical Services to recognize their union.

The nurses’ decision to return to work represents a shallow victory for Medical Services Minister Anyang Nyong’o who took a tough stance on the nurses’ strike since it began in early December. The combative Minister even went so far as to call the nurses ‘zombies’ during a debate in parliament.
