Blow to RAILA’s CORD as KOIGI denounces THEM …… NO AGREEMENT

Tuesday, the 8th of January 2012 -Chama Cha Mwananchi (CCM) party leader Koigi wa Wamwere has clarified that the party is not working in league with the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) even though he conceded that they have had ‘talks with CORD.’

The veteran democracy activist also revealed that CCM was allowing its members to support the presidential candidate of their choice;

“We have been talking to the CORD and indeed other coalitions like Jubilee, but we have not committed to supporting any of them. As a party, we do not have a presidential candidate and we have allowed our members to support candidates of their choice,” said Koigi.

Koigi was responding to some media reports that listed CCM as one of the eight CORD affiliated parties that last Sunday, through Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti, expressed their backing of the CORD alliance.

The other parties are Independent Party (TIP), Mkenya Solidarity Movement, Kenya Social Congress, People Democratic Party, Muungano Party, United Democratic Movement, KADU Asili and Chama Cha Uzalendo.

Koigi however said that the reports got it wrong;

“As it is, we have no signed document to show our intention to join or support CORD. But most importantly, any of our members is free to join them, a personal choice,” he said.

“Political deals are not a gentleman’s agreement. We have not signed any legal document with them and we would not negotiate, as a party, with them over the issue of nominations. I would like to clarify we are not in Cord.”
