Rail cargo transport from western Kenya through Eldoret will remain paralysed after a train went off the main track, damaging a section of the line.
The Thursday evening incident had a train ferrying coffee berries and animal feeds worth Sh30 million swerving off the track at Kosachei.
The incident led to breakage, disjoints and displacement of sections of the railway line. The containers were also thrown off leading to spill of the berries.
However, the train’s operator drove the leading section of the locomotive safely to Eldoret town leaving a bulk of the affected containers carrying the expensive cargo behind.
The police immediately cordoned off the scene and kept vigil until Friday when the Rift Valley Railways personnel arrived.
Deputy OCPD Railways Police Nakuru Division Soita Mwanja said the cargo was destined for export overseas through the Mombasa Port, from Uganda.
