The Jubilee Alliance has promised that it will take back the Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) farm in Malindi and convert it into a sugar plantation if it forms the next government.
The coalition’s presidential running mate William Ruto told a rally at Barani Grounds that a Jubilee government would have a sugar factory and energy production plants set up in Malindi.
The alliance top leadership is at the Coast on a vote hunt with a raft of promises on how their government would revamp agriculture, boost tourism and seek to create jobs for women and the youth.
“The plantation and the factory would create 50,000 job opportunities for the youth and empower the population here economically,” Mr Ruto said.
He said reviving the agricultural sector to produce adequate food for all residents was in the agenda, adding that the days of citizens being subjected to relief food supplies would end.
Mr Ruto said the tourism sector would be boosted to enable the country receive five million tourists annually, instead of the current 1.5 million. Over 75 per cent of Kenya’s tourism is generated at the Coast.
“We as Jubilee have finalised a Master Plan to make sure this is achieved. Malaysia gets 50 million tourists, other smaller states get much higher numbers. There is no reason why Kenya cannot receive five million tourists annually,” he said.
The Eldoret North MP said a Jubilee government would set aside Sh100 million County Youth Fund in the June 2013 budget to enable young people acquire loans at zero interest.
They would also formulate a new curriculum for the Armed Forces and make legislation to allow soldiers to partner with police officers to ensure internal security.
“In our government, soldiers should not just stay in barracks, they will join our policemen to provide security for Kenyans so that we have a secure country we can be proud of, we can invest in and prosper,” he said.
The coalition’s flagbearer Uhuru Kenyatta said youth would form the next government and asked the old guard to retire and give them a chance.
“Ruto and I have been in government for only seven years while Kalonzo has been in government for 30 years and Kosgey 40 years. Raila has been a minister in the Moi and Kibaki administrations and a Prime Minister in the grand coalition government. Raila keeps blaming me over my father Jomo Kenyatta’s administration. Wasn’t his father a vice-president in that government?” Mr Kenyatta said.
He accused Cord leaders of using insults in their campaigns, saying that Jubilee was for economic transformation.
“Our youth do not have to travel to Nairobi to get jobs,” Mr Kenyatta said, adding that the Coast is endowed with many resources – harbour, land, marine life – which can be harnessed for the welfare of residents.
Environment minister Chirau Mwakwere said: “We will vote for Uhuru from Kiunga to Lunga Lunga.”
At the rallies were assistant ministers Kazungu Kambi, Francis Baya and former MPs Adan Duale, Danson Mungatana, Mahmoud Ali, Lucas Maitha and Suleiman Shakombo, among others.
