UHURU and RUTO should not run for PRESIDENCY – Charles NJONJO

Tuesday October 23, 2012 - Former Attorney General Charles Mugane Njonjo has broken his long silence by saying that Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto should shelve their political ambitions for the sake of peace in the country.

In a statement in one of the local dailies on Tuesday, Njonjo, who is the longest serving Attorney general in the country, said by announcing that they will not vie for presidency they would earn immense gratitude from all Kenyans for having removed the palpable tension in this election.

Njonjo said the two leaders who are facing cases of grave crimes at the International Criminal Court (ICC) should bow down from vying for Presidency since they rejected President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s proposal to create a local tribunal.

Njonjo supported African Union Mediator Kofi Annan by saying Uhuru and Ruto should thank Kofi Annan and his team for their role in bringing the country back from an abyss which we could never have come out of on our own.

“It is deeply embarrassing for me as a Kenyan to see a divisive presidential campaign condemning the one person who helped us together as a nation in 2008,” Njonjo said.
