GODHANA and MUNGATANA eager to REVEAL DETAILS of Tana clashes

Monday, the 22nd of October 2012 -Dhadho Godhana and Danson Mungatana, the two MPs whose names have been mentioned in connection with the Tana River clashes that killed more than a hundred people in a space of just a few weeks, have expressed their eagerness to appear before the probe team investigating the matter.

Godhana, the MP for Galole, has instructed his lawyer Kamoti Mwamkale to write to the probe team asking to be given audience to give his side of the story. The application by Mr Mwamakale read thusly;

“I ask this honourable commission to allow my client full standing to testify before it. My client faces criminal charges for matters related to the clashes and, in fact, lost his job as Assistant Minister, so he is part to this commission.”

Godhana is in a deeper hole than Mungatana because he was even arrested when the massacres in the Tana were at their apogee.

Mungatana’s name was however mentioned by a witness this past week and the MP is now eager to clear his name. When contacted, the Garsen MP said the only reason he was mentioned was because people wanted to throw dirt on his name;

“I don’t mind testifying at the commission. I would like to set the record straight. I was never involved in the clashes in any way. People are just being malicious and want to tarnish my name. I want to give my evidence at the commission hearings,” said Munagatana.

The chair of the commission Lady Justice Grace Nzioka has asked any person or group with information on the Tana clashes to write to the commission seeking audience;

“If other communities or groups also want to apply to be given full standing, we have no problem with that provided they abide by the law. We welcome anyone who can help us get the truth. We have powers to control and direct the cross-examinations and deal with witnesses within the authority of the law,” she said.
